The New Year Cranks In Five New Weekends of Silent Cinema at the Nethercutt

Hand-cranked itinerant silent film shows have been so popular at the Nethercutt, that Joe Rinaudo, founder of Silent Cinema Society, has been invited to bring his 1909 Powers Cameragraph Moving Picture Machine and present five weekends of entertainment (not just two or three) throughout 2020—that’s 15 shows or 30 hours of cranking!

Joe will hand-crank fully restored silent films from his private collection, including features, shorts, comedy and drama. The musical “narration” as it is called, will be composed “on the spot” and played by Dean Mora, organist extraordinaire, adding train whistles, car horns and bonks over the head, among hundreds of other sound effects, as scenes play out on the screen overhead. Gary Gibson will entertain you with glass “magic lantern” slides during reel changes (or when the film breaks).

Kyle Irwin, curator and master technician at the Nethercutt Collection, will host each show and demonstrate antique automated musical instruments before each performance and during intermission.

MEET SUZANNE LLOYD

Suzanne LloydNot only will you be entertained watching Harold Lloyd on the silver screen, you will have the opportunity to meet his granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd,  producer and president of Harold Lloyd Entertainment, who will speak about her grandfather and his career.

An enlightening biography of Suzanne Lloyd is to be enjoyed at the TCM Film Festival site.

WATCH HAROLD LLOYD IN “HOT WATER”

A rare film, Hot Water, from the collection of the Harold Lloyd estate will be hand-cranked by Joe Rinaudo, assisted by Gary Gibson. Dean Mora will narrate the film on the Mighty Wurlitzer.

Harold Lloyd’s films were not shown on television for decades (concensus was editing and commercials would not be appropriate), so the actor and his films are not as well-known as many other silent film stars.

During the 1920’s Harold Lloyd was the most successful film star in the world. When he died, his entire film library was bestowed upon his granddaughter.  Suzanne Lloyd considers it an honor to preserve and promote Harold Lloyd’s legacy for future generations.

Joe Rinaudo and the Nethercutt consider it an honor to have Ms. Lloyd enlighten their attentive and appreciative audience as Joe cranks her grandfather’s films.

Producers Guild Entertained at Nethercutt

The Producers Guild of America was treated to a performance by Professor Joe Rinaudo and Robert Israel playing the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ at a private event held at the Nethercutt Collection on Saturday evening, March 3rd, 2018. Members of the guild young and old were mesmerized by the magic of the hand-cranked moving picture machine and the films projected on the silver screen. Great laughter was heard as the audience was treated to the likes of Charley Chase, and Laurel & Hardy. During intermission and after the performance guild members asked and received many answers regarding how the projector worked and its history. Another wonderful program by the Professor providing entertainment and education to the admiring crowd.

The following evening, Professor Rinaudo entertained at the Academy Awards. Story and photos.
